This is Diary of a Butterfly, a new blog by Aotearoa based writer and artist Anneleise Hall.
I write about what's on my mind concerning Aotearoa and global politics, society and community. I like looking at all the ways different thinkers and communities imagine adaption to ecological limits, including a just transition. I'm constantly observing wider trends and patterns, the systems that produce outcomes and seeking to understand the inner workings of influence campaigns locally and globally.
May contain swearing.
"How do we understand and navigate a world in crisis, where bad actors want power at all costs and systems seem to be collapsing? How can we, as individuals and collectively, harness chaos to find our potential?"
These are the questions I'm asking myself as I seek to investigate and identify the forces we are up against, what's driving the agenda and ways we can find collective agency to respond.
I'm also a CSA survivor so I'm particularly attuned to the way abuse tactics underpin and enforce oppressive political ideologies, how propaganda is unsurprisingly adjacent to grooming and how psychological warfare and mass trauma through tech weaponisation, data scraping and radicalising people is the low down power grab. It's patriarchy and I'm over it.
I might also write random personal reflections, satire or poetry and post my own art.
The values of this blog: committed to realising a Tangata Tiriti based future for Aotearoa, human rights are not negotiable, environmental stewardship is a responsibility, pro-democracy, evidence and fact based.
I welcome comments, fact checking, evidenced critiques. If I edit or correct copy beyond spelling or punctuation I will note it.
